Our Story
The Manor was established in 1964 through the generosity of Marian and Don Dixon – and was lovingly and personally renovated and maintained by them and a dedicated group of friends until 1975, when the Dixons began donation to the First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles, on the conditions that: 1) The Manor be affordable; 2) The Manor serve the "well elderly"; 3) The Manor be operated by the church for at least ten years. Thirty-five years later, the Manor is a vital resource in the community and an important ecumenical mission outreach of the church in the community. Social definitions of what constitutes being "elderly" and "well" have changed markedly since 1975, but First Presbyterian Church continues to provide The Manor as a very affordable residence for Seniors in the community.
Today, The Manor is a non-profit mission of the church, operated by an independent board of directors. It is maintained through the volunteer efforts and monetary donations of church members, who take a personal interest in the manor and its residents, visiting often, hosting regular social gatherings and holiday events, and sharing Sunday's noon Dinner.
A few years ago, church members volunteered to retrofit rooms into suites, in order that every resident has a private sitting room, in addition to their bedroom and private bath; as well as the shared community rooms, all meals and all utilities. Families say that no monetary value can be placed on the comfortable homelike atmosphere at the Manor, though the rates are extremely reasonable. Presbyterian Manor is right on Genesee Street, where the front porch overlooks the hustle and bustle of Village life, and the backyard overlooks the perennial gardens of The Krebs restaurant.
